The research team links AI and AM not just to greener operations but to redesigned offerings and cost structures: smarter product design, leaner localised production, and performance metrics that reward resource efficiency. In short, AI and AM are catalysts; the sustainable business model is the reaction they enable.
The evidence is strong and practical. From a dataset of 267 SMEs, the authors find that AI improves sustainable product design, sustainable manufacturing processes, and overall sustainable performance, and that AI also mediates the pathway from technology to outcomes. Translation: value emerges when firms connect the dots between data-driven design choices and process optimisation; “tech in isolation” underperforms “tech integrated into how we design and make.”
The industrial context makes the upside real. With deep automotive and machinery bases, Czech firms - think Škoda and its supply chain - can pair AI’s design intelligence with AM’s on-demand, tooling-light production to cut materials, shorten lead times, and open service-centric revenues (e.g., rapid spares), strengthening both competitiveness and sustainability. The study also flags system enablers: targeted funding for SME adoption and university programs that prepare talent at the AI–manufacturing–environment nexus, signals that business-model change is most durable when policy and education move in step.
How can you benefit from the insights? Start where impact is locked in: the product design brief. Use AI to surface lower-material geometries and end-of-life pathways; use AM to prototype and produce only what’s needed, where it’s needed. Treat AI and AM explicitly as tools inside the model, align incentives, KPIs, and customer promises with sustainable performance so that better design and cleaner processes pay back in margin and market share. Above all, adopt the paper’s core lesson: sustainability isn’t a single technology but an integrated system, the business model you design around AI and AM is what turns potential into performance.
