The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business will be the first business school in the US to join CEMS – the Global Alliance in Management Education

Beginning in August 2020, Cornell students who enroll in the Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Applied Economics and Management in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management may elect to pursue a designation in International Management from CEMS.

CEMS – a consortium based in Europe – confers a Master’s in International Management (MIM) certificate upon completion of a one-year, postgraduate, pre-experience program delivered by a global alliance of 32 academic members (leading business schools), 69 corporate members (multinational companies) and 7 social members (NGOs).

CEMS MIM graduates will join a network of thousands of alumni, spanning 85 nationalities and working in over 75 countries.

A rising demand for the Master’s in Management

“We are very pleased to collaborate with CEMS as the first business school in the United States on the launch of the CEMS Master’s in International Management (MIM),” said Joe Thomas, Interim Dean of the SC Johnson College of Business.

“We believe the CEMS Master’s in International Management (MIM) will be a differentiator for students studying at Cornell and allow for career acceleration, deep learning and career opportunities across the globe,” said Lynn Wooten, Dean of the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management.

Roland Siegers, Executive Director of CEMS, said: “We are delighted to welcome Cornell SC Johnson College of Business as our first and currently only academic member in the US. The SC Johnson College is a fantastic institution, deeply aligned with the values of CEMS – to prepare responsible leaders for a more open, sustainable and inclusive world.”

“This alliance is a significant step forward, as the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business clearly sees growth potential in the Master’s in Management (MIM) segment of the US business education market, which is the core of all CEMS activity.”

“Worldwide trends show that the Master’s in Management has continued to grow steadily in applications over the last 10 years and we firmly believe that the demand for such degrees will rise within the US, as graduates desire to make an immediate impact in their careers and are less willing to take time out of the strong job market to study.”

“The CEMS MIM will be a differentiator for MPS students studying at Cornell’s Dyson School. Graduates will gain steep career acceleration, unrivalled global career opportunities and access to a unique international network, which will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Students will complete their Cornell MPS requirements and the CEMS requirements over three semesters in total, and engage in a Global Performance Learning Lab.”

“Equally, CEMS students from outside the US will not only gain a world-leading education from an Ivy League school, but the partnership will also open up wide opportunities for mutual learning and a better understanding of the US market and culture.”

A multicultural, boundless classroom

The CEMS MIM offers students the opportunity to be educated in a multicultural and boundless classroom. Students study the CEMS curriculum for one term at their home university, with mandatory study abroad in a different CEMS member school for the second term. In addition to completing a home degree, students complete a business consulting project and a compulsory international internship with CEMS corporate members.

Upon graduation, students’ careers take a truly international path in a great variety of sectors and in many cases within multinational companies:

  • 95% are employed or continuing their studies
  • 75% work for multinational companies

With a 47/53 male/female ratio, CEMS is committed to enrolling a diverse group of students.

Cornell students will earn the MPS in Applied Economics and Management from Cornell as well as the CEMS MIM, which is awarded by the CEMS organization. To be considered for admission, students apply to the Dyson MPS-AEM and must meet its eligibility requirements. Applicants must also meet CEMS language proficiency requirements by graduation.

Expanding the talent pool for US business

Cornell University has eight undergraduate colleges and four graduate professional units at its main campus in Ithaca, NY. The university also administers two medical graduate and professional units in New York City and one in Doha, Qatar. Student enrollment totals 23,600 students (undergraduate, graduate and professional).

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business has strong links to the corporate world and huge potential through its presence in New York City. In addition, in 2017, Cornell University opened its Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City, offering programs in computer science, engineering, law and (with the Cornell SC Johnson Graduate School of Management) business.

As part of its membership of CEMS, Cornell will bring on board two corporate members (global multinational companies) that will partner with CEMS. The collaboration will be beneficial for the corporate members, as well as US companies more widely, who have an interest in hiring and developing talent with both regional and global knowledge, to foster growth plans.

By tapping into the CEMS network, businesses can get access to a diverse, talented pool of graduates – knowledgeable, socially-responsible, international business practitioners, able to execute effective business decision-making.

In addition, the collaboration will offer an opportunity for US companies to develop brand awareness across the globe, with CEMS member schools acting as one-stop shop contacts in 31 countries on five continents.

“CEMS’ exclusive network will provide Cornell students active engagement with CEMS’ prominent corporate members and over 13,000 alumni who collaborate in classroom learning, internships and career management,” said Rohit Verma, Dean of External Relations, SC Johnson College of Business.
