Career Explorer UK

The latest edition of the CEMS Career Explorer Series took place on April 16th, with the support of the London School of Economics (LSE) Department of Management. During this time, students had the opportunity to gather numerous information relevant to working in the UK.

For the first half of the event, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Emma Mullen, Careers Consultant at LSE Department of Management. Emma’s 13-year career in UK higher education includes roles across teaching, research, and professional services focusing on student careers and employability, working with both Bachelors and Master’s level business and management students. She spent her earlier career within HR and in-house recruitment. Alongside her PhD in graduate employment, she holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Human Resource Management, and a PGCert in Careers Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education. She is also an Academic Associate member of the CIPD.

During a 1-hour informative session, Emma addressed the UK graduate hiring landscape, including changes in visa, implications of covid-19 pandemic, and the rise of AI.

Following this overview, she shared key tips about working in the UK, including on:

  • Key considerations: degree title and grades are not the sole focus; perseverance is needed, and it is essential to draft a job search strategy.
  • Graduate schemes and graduated jobs differences
  • Typical UK Graduate hiring timeline, and typical recruitment and selection process
  • Direct examples of how to analyse a job offer based on consultancies offers

Emma went through a lengthy Q&A with over 30 participants and shared relevant tips for a successful career in the UK.

In addition to this session, students had the opportunity to attend a rotational chat with 4 CEMS alumni working and living in the UK. We would like to thank Davide Finizia (AlphaSights), Vincent Trunong (Bain & Company), Anna Kollár (Mastercard) and Paolo Tagliaferri (Salesforce) for their participation!

The CEMS Career Explorer Series provided a unique occasion to give prominence to the career opportunities and markets of the UK! Thank you to all our speakers and participants for joining!
