CEMS partners with UNICEF for 'SchoolsforAfrica'
|
The “Schools for Africa” project is a joint initiative between UNICEF and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The aim of the project is to increase the access to and quality of education for children in six countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe). The need for such an initiative is clear: in Sub-Saharan Africa alone 45 million children to receive basic education. That is half of Africa's future trapped behind an insurmountable wall of ignorance, poverty and discrimination.
The goal of UNICEF is to promote the “Child Friendly School Approach” in all of their African projects. These projects involve:
*Building and rehabilitation of schools
*Offering a safe and protective environment where children can learn and play
*Ensuring that children have access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities
*Ensuring that children have exercise books, pens, school and sports materials
*Ensuring that teachers are trained to provide quality education and basic life skills
*Ensuring that children are informed about hygiene and health issues, HIV prevention, etc.
*reducing the educational gap between the sexes
Over a 3-year period, CEMS would like to support 2 projects, in Rwanda and Mozambique making a total of 200.000 US$ (127,000€) to be raised. But for this first year of cooperation we will concentrate on the Rwanda Project hoping to raise about 5.000€ per CEMS Club. By setting a concrete financial target we do not want to slow your ambition, but rather give you an idea of what is needed to fulfill our pledge towards UNICEF. Moreover, we would be even happier to reach the entire goal by the end of this year. If we manage to raise the total of USD 200.000 by December of this year we could realize both projects immediately.

The global implementation of the CEMS MIM is planned for 2009 once the new schools have developed and promoted the programme locally. European students will be able to spend their terms abroad outside of europe with a wider choice os schools on different continents. The non-European students will have the same option to spend one or two terms abroad as part of their MIM programme.
Says Thomas Bieger, Vice-Rector at the University of St. Gallen and Chair of the Academic Committee
"All terms will be structured with a comparable pattern and will undergo the same quality check, which is the real trademark of CEMS, and the quality insurance for students and recruiters. All CEMS schools will host CEMS Clubs run by students, in order to spread the community spirit beyond Euroean borders and foster the networking component of the CEMS experience."

5th CEMS Research Seminar on Supply Chain Management
|
The 5th CEMS Research Seminar on Supply Chain Management took place in Riezlern, Austria, from January 23 to January 27, 2008.
The meeting is becoming the unofficial start of the year for the CEMS Faculty Group (FG)Logistics in the beautiful setting of the Kleinwalsertal.
Participants from 14 different CEMS schools (as many as never before!) as well as colleagues from affiliated schools were present and enjoyed the time meeting old friends and making new contacts within the CEMS community.
Some 12PhD students presented their current work to the group and received helpful feedback on it. Furthermore, the participants enjoyed listening to pedagogical presentations as well as status reports on projects currently conducted at the different schools.
The seminar also included the annual FG Logistics meeting. Worthwhile mentioning are - certainly - the traditional Mafia card game sessions in the “Kellerbar” after the official program. Join us next year to participate in the group, meet people and present your work.
Next year’s seminar will take place February 4 – 7, 2009, so save the date!

Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa chosen as the Portuguese member of the CEMS community
|
The Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa has been chosen as the CEMS member in Portugal.
For Professor José Ferreira Machado, Dean of the FEUNL - “the Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa’s entry to this exclusive club is, most of all, an international recognition of the quality and prestige of management education and research in Portugal, showing the importance of our country on the world map of higher education in this scientific area.”
Until now, no program offered by a Portuguese school has been present in the Financial Times ranking of pre-experience Masters Programs. FEUNL’s entrance in this alliance will allow Masters’ students in Portugal an exclusive access to the CEMS Masters in International Management, opening new doors to relevant international careers.
As highlighted by Professor João Amaro de Matos, Associate Dean for International Affairs at FEUNL, “besides the requirement of fluency in three languages, the program implements the concept of international mobility among top level institutions, as students must attend one semester in their school of origin and another semester at another CEMS school, besides taking part in international internships with CEMS institutional partners.”
About Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa
Founded in 1978, the Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa leads Portugal in the teaching and research of Economics and Management disciplines. Conceived with a spirit of innovation, its principles are modelled on those of American universities, where many of its professors obtained their degrees.
The School’s current offer includes two undergraduate programs (Economics and Management), three masters programs (Economics, Finance and Management), an MBA and two PhD programs (Economics and Finance).
The School’s internationalization strategy and the quality of its programs are publicly acknowledged through the achievement of the EQUIS accreditation (by EFMD) and the AMBA accreditation (from the Association of MBAs).
