| The Project |
| |
The Schools for Africa project is a joint initiative between UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Hamburg Society for the Promotion of Democracy and International Law. The aim of the project is to increase the access to and quality of education for children in six countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe). The need for such an initiative is clear: in Sub-Saharan Africa alone 45 million children to receive basic education. That is half of Africa's future trapped behind an insurmountable wall of ignorance, poverty and discrimination.
The "schools for Africa" project aims to create conditions that fosters a learning environment for the children and give them the ability to learn, play and take control of their future.
The goal of UNICEF is to promote the "Child Friendly School Approach" in all of their African projects. These projects involve:
Building and rehabilitation of schools |
| |
Offering a safe and protective environment where children can learn and play |
| |
Ensuring that children have access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities |
| |
Ensuring that children have exercise books, pens, school and sports materials |
| |
Ensuring that teachers are trained to provide quality education and basic life skills |
| |
Ensuring that children are informed about hygiene and health issues, HIV prevention, etc. |
| |
Reducing the educational gap between the sexes |

| GOAL |
Our goal is to raise €65,000 by the CEMS annual event of 2010 held in Rotterdam. Thanks to your enthusiasm and hard work, we have already raised €35,400. This is a very good start and we would like to thank you all warmly for your motivation. We now have to consolidate our efforts in order to bring the project to a good end. We need to raise €30,500 in three semesters, and we are confident that with the motivation and the CEMS spirit that animates us all, we will reach our target!
